Abstract

In a process for making a combustible gas by partial combustion of a hydrocarbon oil, optionally with steam, at elevated pressure, the sootcontaining make gas is washed with water or steam and the aqueous suspension of soot so formed is contacted with a hydrocarbon oil to form soot/oil aggregates which are separated from the water and pulverized and mixed with further hydrocarbon oil to form a fuel which may be recycled as feedstock to the partial combustion process. The water content of this fuel may amount to less than 4% by weight. The same oil may be used as feedstock, for forming the aggregates, and for the final step, e.g. a residual fuel oil, or a lighter oil, e.g. gas oil, may be used to form the aggregates. Pulverizing and mixing may take place in a colloid mill, and an unspecified solid catalyst may be added at this stage. The final fuel is compressed and heated before delivery to the reactor.
