Abstract
1,051,175. Fluorocarboxylic acid based soaps. PENNSALT CHEMICALS CORPORATION. May 20, 1964 [May 27, 1963], No. 20830/64. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] Surface-active compositions comprise a mixture of (a) from 55-90% by weight, and preferably from 60-80%, of at least one fluorinated compound of the formula wherein Z is fluorine or chlorine, X is hydrogen, an alkali metal atom, an ammonium radical or an alkyl substituted ammonium radical containing up to three C 1 to C 4 alkyl groups and n is an integer from 6-8, and wherein the fluoroalkyl group ZC n F 2n has a chain length from 5-8 carbon atoms, and (b) from 45 to 10% by weight, preferably 40-20%, of at least one fluorinated compound of the above formula wherein n is an integer from 9-13 and the fluoroalkyl group has a chain length of 9-12 carbon atoms. It is preferred that component (a) is constituted by at least two different fluorinated compounds of the formula specified. The mixtures of the acids may be made by telomerization procedures starting from 2-iodoperfluoropropane or 2-iodoperfluoroethane with tetrafluoroethylene; or by starting with 1- chloro - 2 - iodo - hexafluoropropane, or 1 - chloro - 2 - iodotetrafluoroethane, and the reaction of the iodides with chlorosulphonic or fluorsulphonic or with fuming sulphuric acid to give the carboxylic acid. The final mixture of carboxylic acids may be obtained by either starting with an appropriate mixture of fluoroiodides, or by mixing the individually produced carboxylic acids in the desired proportions. Alternatively the fluorinated carboxylic acids may be produced by electrochemical fluorination of the corresponding hydrocarbon carboxylic acid in liquid hydrogen fluoride. In the examples the mixtures are prepared by hydrolysis of the reaction product of telomer iodides and chlorosulphonic acid with sodium hydroxide in aqueous solution, the three carboxylic acids being thereafter isolated by acidification with sulphuric acid and ether extraction, and the resulting acid is thereafter converted to the ammonium, sodium, potassium, and lithium salts respectively. In a further example the conversion of the telomer iodide to the carboxylic acid is described using fuming sulphuric acid.
