Indolyl-3-acetic acid derivatives of the formula wherein R 1 is an aryl, substituted aryl, heterocyclic aryl or substituted heterocyclic aryl group, R 2 is hydrogen or a C 1-5 alkyl, C 2-5 alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl or substituted alkyl or aryl group, R 3 is hydrogen or a C 1-5 alkyl or C 2-5 alkenyl radical and R 3 is a hydrogen or halogen atom or. a C 1-5 alkyl, C 1-5 alkoxy, haloalkyl, nitro, amino, substituted amino, cyano, aminomethyl, alkyl-substituted aminomethyl, mercapto, dialkylsulphamoyl or benzylmercapto radical are prepared by agitating the corresponding alkyl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl ester with an esterase such as Streptomyces spheroides, Aspergillus oryzal, Zygosaccharomyces acidifiens or Alcaligenes sp. Methods for the preparation of the ester starting materials are described. Other intermediate compounds described include ethyl 2-carbethoxy-3-methyl-5-methoxyindolenin-3-acetic acid ethyl ester and the corresponding free dicarboxylic acid,. 5 - methoxy - 3 - methyl - 5 - methoxyindolenin - 3 - acetic acid, 2; - methyl - 5 - methoxyindole - 3 - acetic acid, methyl 2 - methyl - 5 - methoxy - 3 - indolyl - acetate, p - chlorobenzanisidide, N - (p - chlorobenzoyl) - N - (p - methoxyphenyl) - 1 - methyl - 2 - oxo - propylamine, N - p - chlorobenzoyl - N - p - methoxyphenyl - 3 - oxo - 4 - amino - valeric acid ethyl ester, N-p-chlorobenzyl-p-anisidine, N-pchlorobenzyl - N - p - methoxyphenyl - 3 - oxo - 4 - aminovaleric acid ethyl ester:
