Abstract
1,049,584. Laminates and laminating. TRIPOINT INDUSTRIES Inc. Feb. 21, 1964 [March 29, 1963], No. 7339/64. Heading B5N. A sheet of polytetrafluoroethylene (Fig. 1, not shown) is bonded to a metal substrate by interposing a thin film of a copolymer of fluorinated ethylene and fluorinated propylene, applying a uniform pressure of at least 25 p.s.i., heating to at least 625‹ F. for at least five seconds, cooling, e.g. to no higher than 500‹ F., whilst maintaining the pressure, and finally cooling, the cooling steps being effective in 30 seconds to 1¢ minutes. The metal may be faced on one side as shown, or on both sides, with P.T.F.E., or a single sheet of P.T.F.E. may be faced on both sides with metal. The metals usable may be aluminium, iron, steel, brass or copper, may be rigid or flexible and flat, curved or otherwise shaped. To make a flexible product a lay-up of components 16 (Fig. 7) is fed over a roller 17 around a heated roller 13 on which it is pressed by a spring-tensioned stainless steel endless belt 10 which passes around rollers 11, 12, 15. The roller 15 and a small roller 14 are cooled and the laminate 18 so cooled is led off over a roller 19.
