Abstract

A composition comprises polystyrene, a copolymer of styrene with at least one copolymerizable monomer, a homopolymer of a substituted styrene, a copolymer of a substituted styrene with at least one copolymerizable monomer, or a blend of two or more such polymers, a quaternary ammonium salt, the nitrogen atom of which is substituted by four aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals, or three aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals and a benzyl radical, effective as an antistatic agent, and a diluent that reduces the lubricity of the quaternary ammonium compound. The diluent is preferably a filler, stabilizer or plasticizer. Many composition components are specified; those exemplified are: polymers-polystyrene, an acrylonitrile / butadiene / styrene (ABS) terpolymer, a styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer, and a blend of ABS and styrene/acrylonitrile; diluents-chalk, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, dimethyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, butyl stearate; and a bisphenol A/epichlorhydrin condensation product; quaternary ammonium salts-lauryl dimethyl ethyl ammonium ethyl sulphate, an alkyl (mainly C14) dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, stearamido propyl diethyl methyl ammonium methyl sulphate, and cetyl dimethyl ethyl ammonium ethyl sulphate.
