Abstract
The invention comprises 3-(b -hydroxyalkyl)-4-alkyl coumarins of the formula <FORM:1044608/C2/1> wherein R is an alkyl group, R1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, halogenoalkyl or aryl group, R2 is an alkyl, hydroxy or alkoxy group and R3 is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy group, and a process for their preparation comprising reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:1044608/C2/2> with a compound of the formula <FORM:1044608/C2/3> in the presence of an acid condensation agent. If a hydrogen halide is used as the condensation agent the hydroxy group of the 3-b -hydroxyalkyl radical in the coumarin molecule may, at elevated temperatures, be replaced by halogen.
