Abstract
1,043,295. Pistons. R. DOLL. April 8, 1964 [April 10, 1963], No. 14396/64. Heading F2T. [Also in Division F1] A piston, e.g. of a gas expansion engine, is provided with at least two annular grooves 3, 4, Fig. 1, separated by a distance of between <SP>1</SP>/ 100 th and <SP>1</SP>/ 20 th of the piston circumference and the gap 8 between the piston and cylinder walls varies axially of the cylinder, whereby the pressure of the gas flowing through the gap serves to centre the piston within the cylinder. In Fig. 1, the gap 8 narrows continuously between the grooves in the direction of gas flow whereas in Fig. 4 (not shown) the gap is narrowest at the groove edges and widest at a mid-point therebetween.
