Abstract

Monobenzyl ethers of glycerol and ethylene, propylene and diethylene glycols, in which the benzene ring may be substituted, especially in the p-position, by Cl, MeO or i-Pr, are prepared by reacting the Na derivative of the polyol with the appropriate benzyl chloride; the free OH groups in these compounds may be acetylated with Ac2O. The di-p-isopropylbenzyl ether of glycerol is also isolated in the preparation of the mono-ether. The isobutyrate (I) and lactate of ethylene glycol monobenzyl ether are prepared from the latter by reaction with isobutyric acid/ (CH2Cl)2/p-toluenesulphonic acid (H2O removed azeotropically) and ethyl lactate/NaOH (transesterification), respectively. The isobutyrate of the mono-p-chlorobenzyl ether of propylene glycol was prepared analogously with I.ALSO:A method of dyeing keratinous, regenerated protein or hydrophobic (e.g. nylon) fibres, comprises contacting them with an aqueous solution, suspension or dispersion of a dye which is less soluble in water than in a compound of formula <FORM:1041554/D1-D2/1> where X is H or OR3 and either one or two of R1, R2 and R3 is PhCH2 which may be substituted in the nucleus by halogen or C1-5 alkyl or alkoxy, any others of R1, R2 and R3 being H, lactoyl or C1-5 alkanoyl, n is O or 1, m is 1 but may be 2 when n is O, in the presence of such compound. Examples describe dyeing and printing wool in presence of o- + p-chlorobenzyl ethers of ethylene glycol.
