Lighting fires; draught, inducing.-An oilabsorbing fire-lighter, which may also be used for other purposes, and without oil, for inducing draught in and supplying air to fires, consists of a slagwool, asbestos, or like packed container with apertures for the outlet of vapour, the flow of which is initiated by wicks projecting from the container. In combination with this device, there may be used various supports for it and for a conical hood or like device placed upon it. Fig. 1 shows a fire-lighter consisting of two stamped shells fitted together and containing slagwool or like absorbent. A tapering air passage 2 rises through it, and in the top is a ring of perforations at the upper ends of small nipples 4. At the lower end of the air passage 2 are one or more wicks 7. The device, with the slagwool &c. charged with oil is placed on a tripod 8, 9, Fig. 2, the parts 11 of which support a hood 12. A smaller hood 14 may be placed on the fire-lighter. Figs. 3 and 5 show modifications. The fire-lighter 1. Fig. 3, is secured in loops 17, 18 respectively formed on and sliding on a cranked or straight handle 16, and is attached to a grate bottom by means of the T-piece 19 attached to the part 18 at a point above the centre of gravity of the device. Fig. 5 shows a wire frame 21 with shoulders 20 for securing a similar tapering fire-lighter 1, above which is set a hood 24. AT-piece 25 similar to that shown in Fig. 3 is fitted.
