Abstract

Chromite ore is pelletized and the pellets are heated with a carbonaceous reducing agent, which provides carbon up to 10% of the weight of the ore, and reduced iron is removed therefrom. The ore may be ground to 70% less than 200 mesh B.S.S. before pelletization. The carbonaceous reducing agent may be coal, charcoal, graphite or organic compounds which decompose to yield carbon, e.g. starch, molasses or tar. The carbonaceous reducing agent may be ground to the same particle size as the ore, mixed therewith, and incorporated in the pellets. Pellets may be formed using binding agents, e.g. sodium or calcium chloride, sodium carbonate, or the above-mentioned organic compounds. The carbonaceous reducing agent may provide an amount of carbon which is from 2-6% of the weight of the ore or from 10-40% of the weight of the metallic iron content of the ore. The pellets may be heated to a temperature in the range of 1000-1450 DEG C. Reduced iron may be removed from the pellets by acid leaching, e.g. using sulphuric acid having a strength of 5-10% v./v. In a typical example, chromite was mixed with 2% graphite by weight and pelletized using 5% sodium chloride solution as binding agent. The pellets were heated in a shaft furnace at 1340 DEG C. for 2 1/2 minutes and quenched in 10% v./v. aqueous sulphuric acid for 2 1/2 hours at room temperature.
