Abstract
Description
As shown in
Figure 1 attached, the passports generally comprise three main elements, namely a booklet 1, a cover page 2 and a cover 3.
The booklet 1 consists of a stack of a series of sheets 10 folded along a common fold line 12 to form a number of pages 11 of the same dimensions. This number of pages varies according to the country issuing the passport. It is usually 32, 48 or 64.
On some pages the passport holder data is printed, while others are intended to receive visas. The booklet 1 is connected to the cover page 2 by means of a seam 4 which extends along the above-mentioned fold line. The front and back sides of this cover page are respectively referenced 20 and 21 in the figure. Finally, this set is glued against the reverse side 30 of the cover 3. The latter is provided rigid and thick, to ensure the durability of the passport. Its front face 31, which constitutes the outer face of the passport, bears inscriptions, in particular relating to the issuing state of the passport. 20 The peculiarity of passports, as well as the development efforts of manufacturers, revolve essentially around two axes. The first is security. Thus, the document must have security features sophisticated enough to be protected against forgery and counterfeiting. The second is sustainability. These documents are used for a long time, generally varying from 5 to 10 years depending on the different nations. The manufacturer must therefore guarantee the integrity of the passport throughout this period. One of the problems related to the durability of passports lies in the tearing of the cover page 2 at the level of the sewing thread 4. In fact, during the multiple openings to which the passport is subjected during its circulation, the thread of sewing 4 submits the cover page 2 has important constraints, which can lead to tearing. This problem is all the more important as the number of pages of the interior booklet is large.
To answer this problem, two solutions are currently used: The first is the use of a cover page 2 having high mechanical properties. Thus, by using a cover sheet with a weight greater than 180 g / m2, it is possible to guarantee a satisfactory longevity to the passport. However, this solution has the disadvantage of providing significant rigidity to the passport, which reduces the comfort of its use, and increase its cost. The second is the deposition of a reinforcing strip at the "back" of the passport. This embodiment is illustrated in Figure 2 attached. The passport has a structure similar to that described with reference to FIG. 1. However, in order to be able to use a relatively thin cover page and to retain the flexibility properties of the passport, use is made here of a strip of woven material. 5, called "tarlatane", which is deposited against the reverse side 21 of the front page 2, at the seam 4, before being sewn. This woven material is therefore between the cover page 2 and the cover 3 once the passport has been finalized, thus offering sufficient resistance to the stresses of the sewing thread 4. However, this operation modifies the thickness and the surface condition of the the cover page 2. This difference in thickness can generate a bead on the cover 3 and / or on the cover page 2, which is detectable both visually and tactilely. This is unpleasant, the user having the impression to have in hand a passport 30 "badly finished". In addition, the difference in surface finish can cause gluing problems when finishing passports. Finally, during manufacture, the establishment of the band generates an additional passage in the machine, which is not valued.
The present invention aims to solve these problems by proposing a passport whose life is improved, and whose external appearance is regular, that is to say does not have a difference in detectable thickness. Thus, the present invention relates to a passport which comprises: - a booklet consisting of a stack of a series of sheets folded along a fold line; - a cover page; - a blanket and a reinforcing tape. ; 10 the booklet, the cover page and the reinforcing strip being sewn together with a seam which extends along said fold line, the assembly thus formed being bonded, by the reverse side of the cover page, against the reverse side of said cover, that is to say, its internal face. This passport is remarkable in that said reinforcing strip is disposed against the front face of said cover page, that is to say that turned towards said booklet. Thus placed, the reinforcing strip is visible on the "inside" side of the passport, that is to say when it is opened. But positioned in this way, it generates no extra thickness visible from the outside. In addition, its presence "inside" the passport allows, if necessary, to affix information and / or, as will be seen later, to include additional security elements. Moreover, according to other advantageous and non-limiting features: said reinforcement strip is glued to said cover sheet; said reinforcing strip is self-adhesive; said strip is based on at least one polymeric or paper-based material; Said strip is based on a polymer material, and the latter consists of polyester; said reinforcing strip is of elongated rectangular shape, of a width substantially smaller than that of a sheet of the booklet; said reinforcing strip is arranged, relative to the booklet and the cover page, so as to have an overhang of the same width on both sides of the fold line; said reinforcing strip has at least one security element, that is to say an element preventing or making identifiable the fraudulent use of said passport or a copy thereof; said element is incorporated in the thickness of said band or present on its upper surface; said element consists in particular of a diffractive structure, for example a metallized or de-metallized hologram, a fluorescent printing, a magnetic security. Other features and advantages of the invention will appear on reading the following description of a particular embodiment. This description will be made with reference to Figure 3 which shows very schematically, in section, a passport according to the invention. This passport has a structure similar to the one just described. 15 In this case, it comprises a booklet 1 consisting of a series of sheets 10, folded along a fold line 12. This booklet is sewn with a cover page by means of a seam 4, which runs along the fold line 12. In accordance with the invention, a reinforcing strip 6 is disposed against the front face 20 of the cover sheet 2, that is to say on the side facing the booklet. It is also sewn with the set booklet 1 / page 2. It is sort of sandwiched. The booklet 1 / reinforcement strip 6 / cover sheet 2 is also adhered, by the back side of the cover page, to the reverse side 30 of a cover 3, that is to say its internal face, opposite to the outer face 30. The reinforcing strip is preferably of elongated rectangular shape and of a substantially smaller width than that of a sheet 10 of the booklet. In practice, it is sufficient that it "overflows" on either side of the seam line 4, preferably of the same width. This reinforcing strip is preferably self-adhesive cold. However, a hot adhesive or other activation means may be used. The bonding material is chosen so as to allow adequate durability to the strength of the band on the cover page 2. This band may be of a polymeric nature, for example based on polyester, or based on paper. The choice of material will take into account the ability to resist tearing.
Such a strip can be deposited either manually or using a machine. What can be considered a disadvantage, namely the presence of a reinforcing band 6 visible inside the passport can be transformed into advantage, since this band can be used to constitute a support means of at least one security element, that is to say an element preventing or making identifiable the fraudulent use of the passport or a copy of it. It has just been added to the other security features traditionally included in a passport.
This element may be incorporated in the thickness of the strip or present on its upper surface. It consists in particular of a di ffactive structure such as a metallized or de-metallized hologram, a fluorescent printing, a magnetic security, etc.
The passport according to the invention thus has the following advantages: 1) Protection of the cover page against tearing problems related to the sewing thread; 2) It offers the possibility of using a low-weight cover page and giving the passport a satisfactory flexibility; 3) Concomitant integration of security elements, preferably holographic; 4) Response to a problem related to the durability and security of a passport by a single industrial operation; 5) Easy implementation by production processes already used in the fiduciary industry for the manufacture of passports; 6) The surfaces of the pages of guards and blankets to be glued to each other remain unchanged, which facilitates the pasting operation of the passport; 7) Good resistance to external climatic conditions.
