Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a device for increasing the weight / power and stability / power ratios of sailing boats.
The masts of sailing boats are currently fixed or not very mobile in inclination at the heel or against heel. Everything is done to bring stiffness and keep the sail plan vertical.
The sails undergo a lateral thrust, the results of which tend to overturn the boat (1 fig. 1) by pushing the leeward part of the hull or the leeward hull (2 fig. 1) and lifting the hull by reaction wind (3 fig.
1) This basic principle has already caused many famous shipwrecks.
The device according to the invention makes it possible to reduce the risks of capsizing without appreciably lowering the propelling force, while bringing a relieving effect by limiting the resulting vertical forces.
As a first characteristic, it comprises an articulated mast foot sliding over all or part of the width of the boat. Then a gantry which guides and maintains the mast by means of a sliding articulated carriage.
The device makes it possible to tilt the mast and the sail to the wind, which has the effect of directing upwards the result of the thrust and reducing the forces tending to capsize the boat.
The loss of active surface induced by the inclination of the mast varies from 2% at 10 [deg] up to 18% at 35 [deg], this loss is easily compensated in height as much as by moving the center of wing up, the lifting axis is moved in the wind as well as the weight of the part of the mast making against the heel, which increases the desired effect.
The mast which cannot be guyed according to the usual techniques must either be maintained by sliding guy lines, or provided with horns or then structured to hold without these reinforcements.
A forestay remains possible by securing it on a crow's feet calculated to correspond to the center of rotation (7 fig. 3) of the mast.
Rigid stays can keep the gantry in position and a horn before compensating for the rearward pull of the sail and the sheet.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention and its principles.
Figure 1 shows the principle of the forces applied by the wind on the wing (1 fig. 1) and its vertical components (2 and 3 fig. 1). Figure 2 shows schematically the same forces applied by the wind on the airfoil (1 fig. 2) and its vertical components (2 and 3 fig. 2). Figure 3 shows the device in the three extreme positions.
With reference to these drawings, the device comprises an articulated and sliding mast foot (5 fig. 3) on a rail (4 fig. 3), the sliding of which can be obtained by rope hoists or by a chain or cable controlled by winch. .
A gantry (3 fig. 3) maintains and guides the mast while underway and during tilting. The curve of the upper part of the gantry corresponds to a constant distance between the mast foot rail and a height defined according to the available sliding width and the desired inclination angle, this by varying the inclination angle in proportion to the movement of the mast foot on its rail. Diagonal shrouds (8 fig. 1) in a horizontal spacer (9 fig. 1) reinforce the rigidity of the gantry.
The mast is secured to the gantry by a carriage (6 fig.3) sliding in a rail or on the gantry. The carriage is articulated in its connection with the mast to allow the mast / carriage angle variation during the passage from one side to the other.
The device according to the invention is particularly intended for multihull boats but adapts to monohulls under conditions of sufficient width to reach a sufficient angle to be effective.
