Abstract

The anchor has two sections forming a male - female coupling which screws together. The female section (A) is of metal with a diameter the same as that of the screws used in surgery. The female section has longitudinal cut-outs (1) separating blades which are expanded by the male section. The male section is frusto-conical in form. The female section can have irregularities on its surface to encourage bone growth.

Description

BONE ANCHORING DEVICE FOR FIXING WIRES
USED IN ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY
The device aims to provide a fixed point of support for the various metallic or other wires used in bone and osteo-articular surgery to reinsert capsule, ligaments, tendons and detached bone fragments. In the latter case, the method is used for the treatment of epiphyseal fractures (patella, olecranon, etc.).

Usually, the threads used encircle the detached fragment and rest on the bony part in place, after having formed a transfixing channel by drilling. This new device would replace transfixing bone drilling.

The basic device is made up of two separate parts (figure 1):
- The part (A) is a metal part in the shape of a "thimble", hollow, of the usual diameter of the screws used in bone surgery. It has 3 or 4 slots (1) in the vertical direction over part of the length of the part. These slots therefore separate the blades (2) which can deviate from their initial position without breaking within the limits of their elastic capacities. The external surface of the part (A) is coated with an irregular surface (3), of variable nature in order to have better adhesion in the bone tissue, into which the part (A) is introduced.

The interior surface of the part (A) is provided with a thread (4) to admit the part (B) by screwing.

The bottom of the part (A) is perforated with an orifice (5) which can accept the passage of a wire in the direction of its length.

- The part (B) is the male part of the device. It is a metal screw or any other material, whose shape is frusto-conical. The part of the side of the head (6) is therefore of larger diameter than its end (7). The base of the part (B) (6) is also of greater diameter than the entry orifice of the part (A). This part is provided on its surface with a thread (8). Thus, by introducing the part (B) by screwing into the female part (A), a spacing of the blades (2) of the part (A) is created, which ensures that the latter is anchored in the bone tissue.

The part (B) is provided with a head (9), perforated with a transverse channel (10) allowing the passage of wires of any kind and of any diameter. The part (B) is also perforated in the axial direction by a channel (11), which, thanks to the orifice (5) of the part (A), makes it possible to pass an axial wire through the two parts (A ) and (B) when in place.

Figure 2 shows the overall device in place with a wire (12) passed transversely in the channel (10) of the head (9). Figures 3, 4 and 5 show the methods of placing the device in the bone tissue: in the first instance (Figure 3), it is the drilling of the bone by a drill bit (13) of diameter slightly less than the outside diameter of the part (A). This drill bit is provided with a stop (14) whose distance from its end depends on the length of the part (A) chosen by the surgeon. Figure 4 shows the introduction of the part (A) into the bone channel by means of a screwed workpiece carrier (15) in the part (A). Figure 5 finally shows the last time of the installation of the device. It is the screwing of the part (B) in the female part (A), thanks to a key (16). By this maneuver, the surgeon creates the spacing of the part (A) in the bone tissue, in order to cause the desired bone anchoring.
