Abstract
A self-centring release bearing (10) comprising a sleeve (12), an element (14) and, inserted therebetween, a bearing assembly (16) which is radially movable relative to the sleeve (12) and has, for this purpose, an outer race (20) fitted in a sleeve bore (22) by means of an axial retaining ring (34) which engages an inner radial flange (36) of the bore (22) and is split so that it can be resiliently bent before being positioned in the bore (22). Each tip (46A, 46B) of the split ring (34) has a stepped profile such that the thinner end portion (50A, 50B) has an axial thickness (EB) greater than half the thickness (EA) of the ring (34). The two thinner end portions (50A, 50B) extend in complementary opposite directions so that they are partially facing each other when the retaining ring is positioned in the bore. Said release bearing may be used in motor vehicles.
