Abstract

A guard for protecting the fingers of care personnel while withdrawing a needle from an implanted subcutaneous chamber used e.g. for long-term treatment with an injected substance, consists of a round plate (A) e.g. of a metal such as stainless steel having mirror polished surfaces to ensure complete sterilisation. The plate has an elongated slot (C) for the needle and two tube sections (B), also e.g. of stainless steel, welded to its surface to allow the insertion of two fingers so that the plate can be pressed against the skin as the needle is withdrawn. In a variant the guard can be made from a synthetic material which can be sterilised and disinfected and used once only.
