Abstract

The stepladder has a series of risers (1), each fixed to a vertical step panel (4) using a horizontal tie rod (6) which also fixes the base of an exterior handrail support (5). Vertical screws fix each vertical step panel to the step (3) immediately profiled brackets (2). Each vertical step panel has two lateral lugs that engage respective notches in the corresponding riser and support, and top edge of the vertical step panel has a longitudinal tongue that engages in a groove in the underside front edge of the step above.

Description

The present invention relates to the production of stairs for living quarters and the like, and it is more particularly (because it is in this case that its application seems to be of most interest), but not exclusively, the stairs of the screw type or
in spiral ", in order to facilitate its construction and adaptation while improving its solidity and the aesthetic aspect.

The staircase according to the invention is mainly remarkable in that its stringer is constituted by at least one series of uprights which bear on the ground and each of which is assembled to a riser by a horizontal tie which simultaneously ensures the. fixing of the base of an external ramp support, suitable means being provided to secure the joining of each riser to the next lower step.

In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the above arrangement, the uprights which constitute the stringer are in number equal to that of the steps of the staircase and are joined to each other by suitably profiled gussets. These uprights extend by an equal height above each step in order to support an interior ramp or to form a kind of interior railing.

VV in fig. 4.

The support or stringer of the staircase shown in fig. 1 is constituted by a series of vertical rafters or uprights 1, of rectangular section in the exemplary embodiment envisaged. These uprights 1, arranged along a portion of the circumference and provided in a number equal to that of the steps of the staircase, are joined to each other by gussets 2 (see fig. 2) suitably bent, capable of being established in plywood or metal. It will be observed that the height of the uprights 1 increases steadily from one end to the other of the staircase, as will be better understood below.

F.g. 3 clearly shows the profile of each step 3, in the shape of a truncated triangle. In the vicinity of its front edge, each of these steps 3 is hollowed out with a longitudinal groove 3a which opens downward, in order to allow the assembly of the step envisaged with the riser 4 immediately below. Each step 4, cut on its lower edge at 4a to determine two lateral supports, has on its upper edge a tongue or longitudinal pin 4b, the height of which is less than the depth of the groove 3a mentioned above. It will also be noted that each of the vertical edges of the riser 4 is provided with a lateral lug 4c, provided at the level of the free lower horizontal edge of each support.

As more particularly shown in FIG. 4, these lateral ears 4c are intended to engage in housings 1a and 5a, respectively hollowed out in the external face of each upright 1 and in the internal face of the base of a series of vertical supports 5, in equal number to that of the aforementioned amounts. Once this positioning has been carried out in this way, there is a step 3 above the riser 4 considered, taking care that the groove 3a of the latter comes in some way to cover the tongue 4b of said riser. In the longitudinal space of the groove 3a which is not occupied by the tongue 4b is inserted a tie rod or rod 6 which crosses perforations 1b and 5b, respectively formed in the base of the uprights 1 and the supports 5, above housing la and 5a.

The head 6a of each tie rod 6 is applied against the outer face of the corresponding vertical support 5, while its threaded end receives, beyond the perforation lb, a washer and a nut 6b. It is understood that the tightening by force of this nut 6b ensures the rigid assembly of the parts 1, 3, 4 and 5 which then constitute a stable and resistant assembly; the step 3 is supported by the tie rod 6 which simultaneously operates the retention of the riser by pinching.

To complete this assembly, advantageously, at each step 3, recourse is had to a vertical lag screw 7 which passes through a perforation 3b made in the vicinity of the rear edge of the steps and which engages in a blind transverse drilling 4d (FIG. 4 and 5) provided in the risers 4. The tightening of the lag bolts 7 obviously strengthens the fixing of the steps and the risers of the staircase; it will be noted that this action is carried out in a restricted thickness of the wood of the riser, so that the drying effects will be less felt on the whole of the structure.

1. The uprights 1 of the stringer and the vertical supports 5 are established so as to protrude by an equal height above the corresponding step 3, so that the abovementioned uprights form a kind of internal railing while the supports can be equipped with an external ramp 8 as shown in FIG. 1.

It should moreover be understood that the foregoing description has been given only by way of example and that it in no way limits the field of the invention from which one would not depart by replacing the execution details described by all other equivalents. It is understood in particular that the production of the stringer can be the subject of a host of variants, depending in particular on the conformation and the arrangement of the room intended to receive the staircase.
