Abstract

The positioning of an optical fibre without a connector ensures that the end face is set square to the connector axis without damaging its surface. Positioning is based on the use of a sprung (34) sphere (29) bearing on the fibre (14) end face (38). The sphere size determines the extent to which the fibre is recessed within its holder, normally a few tenths of a millimeter. The connector consists of a tube (12) within which is held, at the mating end, a centralising annulus (14) pref. of an industrial sapphire style medium. The annulus internal dia. matches that of the fibre opening out (18) towards the rear face to ease insertion. The fibre end face is set up by the sphere carrier in a holder (21) which slides within the outer cylinder (11) of the connector.
