Abstract

A transportable crane has a grab (11) actuated by a hydraulic cylinder. The grab is suspended from the jib (10) by a cable (20) which is wound around a drum (25) mounted in the end of the jib. This drum is normally held stationary by a spring loaded disc brake. In the event of an overload on the grab, the retaining force of the brake is overcome and the cable is paid out so that there is relative motion between grab and jib. This motion breaks the coupling in the hydraulic supply (34, 35) to the cylinder and so releases the load.
