Abstract

The foil is made of a metal(a) which has an electrochemical potential more negative than the material of which the components are made. When the components are made of steel, metal(a) is pref. Zn, al or Mg; and the metal foil (a) is pref. coated, at least on one side, by layer(b) of adhesive covered by a protective foil(c) peeled off layer(b) when foil(a) is applied to a component. Foil(a) pref. has a thickness of a few tenths of a mm; and may contain holes for bolts employed to join the metal components together; alternatively, welding may be used to join the components, in which case no holes are required in the foil. Used in assemblies which are subsequently subjected to protective treatments, e.g. phosphating and lacquering, where the treatment cannot penetrate the narrow gaps between the assembled parts.
