Abstract

Lubricant compsns. comprise (a) 100 pts. wt. of synthetic ester base oil (b) 0.01-10. (pref. 0.01-0.5) pts. wt. of an ammonium phosphate, and (c) 0.01-5.0 (pref. 0.01-0.5) pts. wt. of an ammonium organosulphonate salt. Component (a) is selected from (i) simple esters derived from 1-18C monohydric aliphatic alcohols and 2-22C monobasic or 2-25C dibasic aliphatic acids; (ii) complex esters formed by reaction of >=2 cpds. selected from 1-18C monohydric aliphatic alcohols, 2-22C monobasic aliphatic acids, 2-70C aliphatic glycols or polyol ycols, 4-25C polyhydric aliphatic alcohols, 2-22C dibasic aliphatic acids and 3-30C polybasic aliphatic acids, >=1 polyfunctional alcohol and >=1 polyfunctional acid being used; and (iii) polyesters derived from 4-25C di- to decahydric aliphatic alcohols and 2-22C monobasic aliphatic acids. Component (b) is formula (R1O)PO(OR2)(ONH3R3), where R1 is 1-10C alkyl or alkenyl; R2 is 1-10C alkyl or alkenyl, or NH3R3; R3 is H, 1-22C alkyl or alkenyl, R4' substd. phenyl or R5-substd. naphthyl; R3 is H or 1-12C alkyl or alkenyl; R5 is H or 1-6C alkyl or alkenyl. The compsns. have good EP properties (meeting U.S. Navy XAS-2354 specification requiement) and good compatibility with silicone elastomers.
