Abstract

IC engine has a cylinder coated on the internal surface by explosion wire spray coating with alternate layers of steel and a wear- and corrosion resistant material running in combination with >=1 piston ring of graphitised cast iron. The graphited piston rings, in contrast to the usual chromed rings, do not cause excessive roughening of the cylinder walls carrying hard coatings of the type described above. The piston rings pref. contain spherical graphite and may have a nitrided, phosphated or PTFE coated surface.
