Abstract

The oxygen supply in a hospital is distributed through pipes (6) attached to wall fittings (4). The wall fitting is in the form of a cap with a boss containing a valve seat (14). A spring (18) presses a piston (16) against an O-ring on the seat (14). When the pipe (20), which connects the supply to the patient, is screwed into the boss, it pushes the piston (16) off the seat (14). This allows oxygen to flow into the pipe (20) through the holes (19) in the piston. When the pipe (20) is removed the valve automatically closes.
