Abstract

Humidity in gases, esp. corrosive gases, is measured by detecting the temp. increase when a test reagent, pref. conc. sulphuric acid, is exposed to the water vapour in the gas. A differential temp. measurement can be made using one probe at the reaction cell and another at a location downstream of it, in the gas dried by the reagent. These two probes can be connected to a Wheatstone bridge. The appts. is calibrated using gas samples of known humidities, plotting a calibration curve. Produces humidity measurements of good accuracy, quickly (is approx. 5 mins.). This is important where excess water vapour in a corrosive gas can accelerate corrosion of the contg. vessel walls, dangerously weakening them and giving rise to the risk of explosion, e.g. in chlorine or hydrogen chloride or sulphur dioxide. Humidities of 100-2000 ppm. (wt.) can be measured.
