Abstract

The vessel is of the horizontal, cylindrical type with a rotary axial shaft. The shaft has a stepped dia. to form axial zones of major and minor dias. The major dia. of the shaft occupies the counter-current flow, heat transfer section of the vessel at the end provided with inlet for beet slices and outlet for juice. The minor dia. of the shaft occupies the agitated mixing section of the vessel at the end provided with outlet for beet slices and inlet for juice. The major dia. of the shaft is fitted with radial conveyor blades which rotate between annular separators fixed coaxially to the interior of the counter-current flow section. The minor dia. is fitted with radial agitator beaters in the mixing section. Each conveying blade comprises first and second stage radial arms set one behind the other in the direction of rotation. The length of the first stage radial arm is less that of the second. The two arms are joined by a framework with open passages for smooth flow of juice without turbulence. A line joining the centres of the cross sections of the radial arms pref. lies at an angle to the direction of rotation. The cross-sectional area of the first stage radial arm is pref. about double that of the second stage arm. The framework pref. comprises rods joining the arms and stiffened with cross bars. Used for prepn. of cold juice by plasmolysis of sugar beet slices. The slices are eased through the counter-current section against a stream-line flow of juice, producing improved heat transfer and uniform cooling.
