Abstract

The guillotine valve controls a fluid flow in a circular pipe (3,4), using a laminar shutter (12) which aligns and slides on a plane normal to the pipe axis (A). The shutter has a circular aperture (16) which alternates between coincidence and an offset relationship with the pipe bore (17), and slides between parallel planar seats (10,11). The valve seal is effected by a highly elastic membrane (27,28) which is sandwiched between either or both seats (10,11) and the adjacent major shutter face (13,14). Collars (30a,31) clamp the inner and outer membrane (27) edges respectively to the adjacent seat (11) or shutter face (12), with fluid under pressure pumped (34,35) into the interstitial volume to effect the seal.
