Abstract
Prodn. of a propellent mixt. comprises first dissolving nitroguanidine (I) in water at 80-100 degrees C, then adding nitrocellulose (II) and cooling the mixt., while stirring, to 10 to 0 degrees C. (I) crystallises out on the outside and inside surfaces of (II) fibres and the mixt. is homogenised with the nitrate ester a polyhydric alcohol, esp. nitroglycerine (III). The mixt. also includes a stabiliser. Pref. (II) is deaerated by vacuum treatment and added to the (I) soln. under vacuum. The (I) soln. is pref. treated with a wetting agent, esp. 0.05-0.2% methylcellulose, to ensure growth of 'beam-shaped' crystals. The prod. is a colloid having uniform distribution of components and higher (I) content than previously possible. This high (I) content increases the explosive strength of the compsn.
