Abstract

Fired refractory clay or fireclay of compsn. (by wt.) 35-45% Al2O3, 50-60% SiO2, 0.2-1.5% Fe2O3, 0.1-0.7% Na2O + K2O, and 0.1-0.5% CaO + MgO, having a refractoriness of 1740-1800 deg.C is described which is produced in the form of balls vitrified to greater than 90%, having a total open porosity below 0.5%. The clay is used as foundry sand and requires less binder. It exhibits considerably less porosity than fireclay foundry sands available commercially. It is also suitable for use in refractory concrete, as shot blast medium, and as material for interposition between moving pieces.
