Abstract

The method for using magnetically encoded pass cards is explained by reference to a secure enclosure (E) in which there are areas of varying levels of security. People who are to be authorised to enter the whole area (E) carry a card on which their identity is permanently recorded. This is read at the main entrance (PH) and checked against a reference list. As the card is read, a further message is recorded on the card, giving the holder access to selected areas (A, B, or C) only. At the doors to these areas (PA, PB, PC) the card is again checked and if access is authorised, the door is unlocked. The card may be magnetically marked with the permitted time and date of entry. On leaving the complex, a user again needs his card. As he uses it to open the exit, all recently recorded data is erased.
