Abstract

In the process for prepg 2-aminobutan-1-ol (I) by formylation then hydrogenation, 1-nitropropane (II) and HCHO are reacted in aq. medium, in the absence of solvents at mole ratio 1:1-1.0:1 with stirring in presence of a phase-transfer agent (III) which acts simultaneously as catalyst and surfactant, esp. a quat. ammonium hydroxide or a tert. amine. The 2-nitrobutan-1-ol (IV) formed is then pref. hydrogenated at 8-12 bars over a metal catalyst using an 85% H2-15% N2 mixt. (I) is an inter. for org. synthesis. Process gives >=80% conversion of (II) and prod. purity 9%.
