Abstract

Fertilisers in sprayable form, i.e. molten or in concentrated solution or suspension are granulated. Part of the fertiliser is prilled and the prills sieved to eliminate oversize particles and fines. The sieved material is then used to form a moving bed of material which is sprayed with the remainder of the fertiliser, thus increasing the granule size. The yield is increased since over- and under sized particles are not treated. The moving bed of material is smaller than would otherwise be required. The over-or under sized prills are recycled immediately, giving less heat loss. The process is particularly suitable for fertilisers having a high content of ammonium nitrate. In an example, 640 tonnes/day contg. 93.2% NH4NO3, 2% CaCO3 and 3.8% water was treated 384 tonnes/day were prilled giving 371 tonnes/day of the desired size. These were put in a rotating drum and sprayed with 256 tonnes/day of the remaining fertiliser.
