Abstract

A wood burning grate in which waste heat is recuperated and used to heat a hot water supply is made from prefabricated concrete or refractory blocks. At the same time, electric heating coils are embedded in the hearth blocks for auxiliary heating when the grate is not being used to burn wood. The chimney is made from a stack of hollow blocks, possibly eight in number. These are enclosed by panels thus forming a tunnel around which air can be circulated and used to heat the room. Further panels enclose the top of the hearth and incorporate further hot air outlets. The copper water heating coils can then be connected to a hot water tank.
