Abstract

Process is intended for making straight or curved tubes from metal sheet (16) by bending into shape followed by soldering the overlap joint edges. It comprises the application of solder and flux to the edges (23, 24) to be joined, bending the sheet into its desired shape, and in rapid succession, applying heat under pressure (21) and then cooling under pressure (22) to the lap join. The process may be carried out in a mechanism containing a core (12), around which the sheet is bent, and a tool assembly (20) which is vertically and horizontally movable relative to the core and comprises a heated soldering pressure tool (21) extending over the length of the join, a cooled pressure tool (22), and piston cylinder units (18, 19) to produce step-wise vertical and horizontal movement of the assembly.
