Abstract

The protective envelope is used for an electrical device, located within a potentially explosive environment, so as to contain an internal spark or flash. The envelope comprises at least two cylindrical elements, surrounding the electrical device and fitted together via a joint with a stepped edge, for preventing the spark etc. travelling to the outside of the envelope. One of the elements defining the envelope may have a cylindrical opening surrounded by a shoulder (4), the other element having a cylindrical projection which fits into the opening. The elements may comprise a casing containing the electrical device, e.g. a motor, and a cover fitting over the casing.
