Abstract

Extruder for adiabatic extrusion of thermoplastics (e.g. polyethylene), has a screw with an L/D ratio between 28 and 35 and small clearances, i.e. 0.03-0.1 mm, between the screw flights and the barrel along the feed and compression zones. The compression ratio is 2.5-2.8. The screw has a melt calibration zone of constant depth with flight/barrel clearances pref. 0.4-0.6 mm. The screw can be driven at >=350 r/min. Extruder is capable of higher and more efficient outputs than conventional adiabatic extruder with shorter screws and greater flight/barrel clearances. The relatively long compression and calibration zones and coolant control allow the machine to be set to process more than one grade of material.
