Abstract

In the parent patent a rotary, axial flow impeller for part-immersion in a liquid by suspension at the lower end of a non-horizontal, high-speed rotary shaft, the impeller comprising a helical element coaxial with the shaft and surrounded by a coaxial, tubular, open-ended barrel which is fixed to and rotatable with the helical element. The impeller is used to agitate the surface of the liquid, spraying up and dispersing droplets into the gas above the surfaces to provide excellent liquid/gas contacting. It can be used to promote biological puricn. of waste waters by aeration, the physical destruction foam, the wetting of floating powders, cooling the liquid, mixing etc. In this addn. the barrel is conically tapered in the bore from a smaller entry at the lower end containing the helical element to a larger exit above the surface. The upper half of the barrel wall is pref. perforated with holes or scots. Spaced just above the barrel exit, the shaft is pref. fitted with a radial flange. With a curved underside to divert radially outwards the axially impelled liquid. Largely eliminates the deposition of centrifugally flung solids on the internal surfaces of the barrel.
