Abstract
The cooling elements or means in a steel making blast furnace are subjected to severe wear during use. To improve this at least one annular gaseous current is injected within the furnace in the immediate vicinity of the furnace wall and at the same level as the elements. The gas is at a relatively low temp. and is non-oxidising relative to the metallic charge constituents. The gas is injected through the wall of the furnace at a temp. =500 degrees C. Pref. the gas temp. is about 400 degrees C and the gas is pref. a blast furnace recuperation gas. An injector device can be provided and comprises at least one circular manifold surrounding the furnace, the manifold having radially directed pipes spaced regularly from each other each pipe traversing the wall of the furnace and terminating parallel to the internal surface of the wall.
