Abstract
A nuclear fuel element transportation container has a lid penetrating at least partially into the inlet opening; the sealing surfaces for the lid are located inside this opening. A temporary, annular protective cover is used to cover these sealing surfaces around the perimeter of the feed opening during the period in which the lid is removed. The protective cover may also extend over the end surface of the vessel in which the opening is located. The inner face of the annular temporary cover may be rounded and smoothed to promote a funnel effect. Since the sealing surfaces are of extreme importance to the correct functioning of the vessel, the protective cover offers the advantages that they cannot become damaged by the loading or unloading of long fuel elements. In addition, the sealing surfaces are prevented from contamination, thus rendering the subsequent decontamination of the vessel after closure more easy.
