Abstract

Bacterial growth is inhibited by treatment with a water-insoluble dialdehyde polysaccharide (I), which is dialdehyde cellulose (Ia) or dialdehyde starch (Ib), having a degree of polymerisation >=50 repeating units per molecule. Pref. (I) contains >=6 wt. % CHO gps. and enough is used to provide >0.1, esp. >1.5 wt. % in the medium treated. Pref. (I) have >15%, pref. 35-100% of the 2,3-OH gps. oxidised and are prepd. by standard methods e.g. oxidation of the corresp. polysaccharide with HIO4. Used for incorporation into surgical dressing, sanitary napkins, etc., for direct applications to open wounds, and for controlling bacteria (and associated odour) on animals. (I) have a strictly topical effect and do not dissolve in the treated medium.
