Abstract

The containers have a chamber to which the only access is via a neck passage of narrower cross-section than the chamber. The machine has a mounting to hold a container coaxially beneath a vertical, rotary agitator shaft. A beater is fixed to the agitator shaft and the shaft and container moved relatively towards each other so that the beater enters the container chamber. After rotary mixing of the prod. in the container, the shaft and beater are withdrawn clear of the container. The beater is of adjustable cross-section which is reduced to pass through the neck passage and enlarged inside the container during mixing. The beater pref. comprises a long blade pivoted on a horizontal axis passing through the vertical axis of the agitator shaft. The pivotal axis is below the centre of gravity of the blade so that the top of the blade tends to fall away from the agitator shaft axis to a position limited by stop pegs. Used for mixing yoghurst and similar prods. after filling into containers for distribution, e.g. of about 20 cl. to 1 l. capacity. Method obviates the need for premix storage vessels and large, expensive mixing plant.
