Abstract

Useful prods., e.g. carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, biosynthesised in activated sludge, are prepd. by hot acid hydrolysis and/or hot alkali extn. of the sludge. Hydrolysis takes place at pH 0.01-6.0 and 80 degrees-150 degrees C. A press. of 1-5 atmos. can be used. The extracts can be used directly as nutrient media for micro-organisms or for propn. of prods. Alkaline extn. of the sludge at pH 9-13 and 40-90 degrees c is followed by sepn. of proteins at the iso-electric points at pH 3.0-4.5. Both processes can be variously combined for economy and min. waste disposal. Used in prodn. of animal feedstuffs. This gives economic disposal of surplus activated sludge from treatment of sewage and industrial wastes. It is less complication and expensive than existing methods of activated sludge disposal and gives complete destruction of pathogenic organisms and animals.
