Abstract

A glow plug uses a special material for the heating rod of the plug and is used on compression ignition engines. It serves to ignite the fuel particularly at a cold start. It ignites a gas mixture by transmitting the heat from the heating rods. The electrode is mounted along the axis of the flow plug and is extended by a small resistance rod connected to the lead. The specific electrical resistance of the rod (2) is reduced as the temperature increases between 700 deg. and 900 deg. degrees centigrade. The specific resistance increases between ambient and approximately 700 deg. C. The rod is made from silicon carbide. The tip is joined to the conductor via an aluminium contact (11).
