Abstract

The excavator has a bucket (19) on a two-piece (7, 18) boom and inc an adjustable fulcrum piece (20) at the elbow joint. The fulcrum piece (20) can be reset in different positions to modify the position of the fulcrum (23) of the loading arm (18) and, thus, modify the length of the boom. The system reduces the time lost in changing arms to effect changes in the excavator function, and maintains equilibrium of the hydraulic system through out. The fulcrum piece (20) may be of an obtuse triangular form in elevation and when in the 'long reach' position forms an extension of the jib (7), with the apex of the piece locating the fulcrum (23). A short side of the piece is pinned (21, 22) approx. horizontally to the head of the jib (7), and the fulcrum (23) apex is subtended by the long side and the other short side.
