Abstract

Prodn. of ethylene and propylene from a hydrocarbon feed boiling at 360 degrees C and contg. C4+ n-and isoparaffins is carried out by first subjecting the feed to hydrogenolysis at a temp. of 300-550 degrees C, a pressure of 10-150 bars, an LHSV of 0.2-5 and an H2/feed vol. ratio of 300-3000 Nl/l, in the presence of a mordenite catalyst contg. 0.01-25 wt. % of >=1 Gp. VIII metal. The hydrogenolysis effluent is then sepd. into an overhead fraction comprising CH4 and opt. H2, a middle fraction comprising C2-3, hydrocarbons, and a bottoms fraction comprising C4+ hydrocarbons. The C2-3, fraction is then subjected to steam cracking at a temp. of 700-850 degrees C, a pressure of 1-1.4 bar and an H2O/hydrocarbon wt. ratio of 0.25-0.4 for a residence time of 0.2-1.2 sec to form C2-3 olefins. The process is highly selective, e.g. givin C2-3 olefin yields of 58-65% based on the wt. of the feed.
