Abstract
Devices incorporating bundles of hollow fibres laid in a straight length or in hairpin fashion, parallel to each other are produced by winding at least one hollow fibre around and in contact with two guides spaced some distance apart so that flat hollow coils of fibres are obtained. Each coil forms a loop around each guide and runs between the guides in two near enough straight lengths. The movement of the guides advances the hollow coils, as they are wound on towards the ends of the guides, and when they have left the guides, the hollow fibres are practically in straight lengths. The profile of the guides is such that as the hollow windings advance along them, the yarn can relax into an untensioned condition. This elimination of tension may also be effected by guides which change their relative position, or by means of a guide formed from a rod on which external windings are provided. A mechanism may also be fitted on the guides which has a motion identical with that of a sewing machine feeder, or one of the guides may be vibrated. Arrangement produces straight lengths of hollow fibres which do not shrink after being cut at their ends, since they are wound near enough without any tension and when they leave the guides they are practically already in straight lengths.
