Abstract

The differential drive of an automobile has a crown wheel shrunk onto a housing for the bevel opinions. Under normal conditions the transmission operates as a conventional differential drive. The end faces of the boss of one pinion is provided with dogs. A bush which is provided with splines and slides in matching splines in the housing has dogs on its end face. When it is necessary to lock the differential drive, a load is applied to the end of a lever causing the bush to slide towards the pinion engaging the dogs. The drive is then transmitted directly from the housing to the half shaft.
