Abstract
Sandwich shell construction for light aircraft is moulded, and has first and second coatings of reinforcing fabric impregnated with resin, and a cellular core, all polymerised by baking in a mould in the final form of a structural element of the aircraft. An extra length of each coating extends beyond the core for subsequent gluing to neighbouring elements of the structure. The orientation of the threads of the reinforcement follows the direction of the principal planes of the aircraft in the case of reinforcements under shear, and along the diagonals of the principle planes of the aircraft for reinforcements working under normal forces. Pref. a soft moulded polyurethane foam is glued on both sides of the joint between the top and bottom surfaces, to form the leading edge of the wing.
