Abstract
In a mill for fragmentation of solid matls., the feed matl. is dropped coaxially on to a rotor with vanes which redirect the matl. radially outwards to impinge on an annular array of inclined. zig-zag panels acting as the impact surface. The particles travelling horizontally across the rotor are in contact with radially aligned surfaces. Friction losses between the particles and the rotor vanes reduce the ultimate impact speed and require the outer parts of the vanes to be detachable and replaceable to compensate for erosion. In the addn., the vane profile is modified so that the vane face approximates to the natural trajectory of matl. passing across and being accelerated by a spinning plate. Also the installation incorporating such a rotor may be modified so that the prodt. matl. is collected and fractionated in a cyclone, with oversize particles being automatically returned for further pass(es) through the fragmentation unit. The device is esp. suitable for pulverising plastics matls. at sub-ambient temps. Friction and erosion between the particles and the rotor vanes is minimised to what may be negligible levels. Higher impact energies are achieved for a given power input, since the kinetic energy of matl. impinging on the rotor is preserved, as well as being enhanced by spin-out.
