Abstract
The blade of an axial flow gas turbine has a fir tree type root (1) with a platform (3) carrying a profiled section (4) surmounted by a platform (6) with sealing ribs (7). The upper half of the profiled section is reduced in area of cross section. Holes (10) of small diameter extend upwards from the tip of the root (1) to break through the blade surface in the region (8) of the reduction in cross section. The holes form elliptical openings (12) in the blade surface. Cooling air is supplied to the holes (10) and emerges from the openings (12) to form a cool layer over the upper part of the blade.
