Abstract
A method of connecting the metal liner of a prestressed nuclear reactor pressure vessel (e.g. of concrete or other materials) to the circumferentially prestressed wall consists of applying the prestress in two stages; in the first stage a portion (40-60 esp. 50%) of the prestress is applied to the wall but is not transmitted to the liner; then infill concrete is placed between the liner and the wall and then the second prestressing stage is carried out, applying full prestress to the wall but only partial prestress to the liner; the latter prestress is sufficient to compensate thermal stresses which arise in the liner later, during operation. Excessive stressing of the liner is thus avoided.
