Abstract

A device for growing crystals from hydrothermal solutions comprises an elongated, vertical autoclave with crystallisation zone at the top and dissolving zone below, surrounded by thermal insulation, heating elements and a thermostatically controlled chamber. This thermostatically controlled chamber is subdivided in its height into a number of sections, each having its separate heating and control system, thus enabling constant but different temps. to be maintained in the sections for the desired uniform temp. fields in the crystallisation zone and dissolving zone. Preferably, the sections comprise double walls with the heaters and thermostatic control devices in the space between. In particular, one special section constitutes the upper lid of the autoclave and thus ensures reliable temp. maintenance in this region. The method is used for the production of high quality crystals, in particular of piezo-optical quartz, on a commercial scale.
